New York, NY is one of the most exciting places in the world. The city is internationally renowned for its hustle and bustle, historic sites, vibrant neighborhoods, and a dining and shopping scene that’s unlike anywhere else on the globe.

Unfortunately, NYC has also earned a reputation as one of the more expensive places to hang out. So, what do you do when you have an hour to kill during your New York trade show but don’t want to spend a ton of money or stray far from the Javits Center? Here are a few ideas that’ll keep you entertained and your wallet full.

Walkable Places Within One Mile of the Javits Center

Not only can you avoid spending money on attractions when you have a short break from the show floor at the Javits Center—you can save some cash on transportation, too. When you just want to see some sites and breathe some fresh air, there are some great places you can walk to and relax before heading back to the convention center.

Pier 76 at Hudson River Park

Part of Hudson River Park and behind the Javits Center, Pier 76 is a public recreational area that all visitors can enjoy. Since its opening in 2021, the pier has drawn tired convention goers thanks to plenty of benches that let them rest their tired legs as the gaze at the picturesque river.

If you choose to explore the pier, check out the plaques that detail the pier’s history. Or check out the site’s pride and joy: a giant propeller from the S.S. United States. This passenger ship completed 400 journeys across the Atlantic Ocean before its retirement in 1969, and its propeller—an almost 20’ diameter, 36.5-ton mammoth piece of metal—is now on display for everyone to see.

Bella Abzug Park

Stretch your legs on a short half-mile walk from the Javits Center to Bella Abzug Park. This outdoor area celebrates the memory of a passionate lawyer, politician, and social activist who served in the U.S. Congress in the 1970s. The park offers plenty of amenities to enjoy the greenery, including park benches, sitting areas, a children’s playground, and stunning water fountains.

There are also seasonal art installations and exhibits, so be sure to check the park’s website so you know what to look forward to before you go.

Hell’s Kitchen

Visit one of New York’s most famous neighborhoods, which lies just a mile away from the Javits Center. Hell’s Kitchen is home to a huge variety of dining opportunities, plus an invigorating nightlife. If you choose to explore the area without spending a dime, you’ll be treated to a vibrant array of diverse cultures. And if you stop into any of the many restaurants for a bite to eat, you’ll get a true taste of local flavor.

Great Spots Just Over a Mile From the Javits Center

Of course, if you have a rental car parked at the Javits Center, there are plenty of free things to see and do a short drive away. Since some of them are completely free, you can check a few items off of your sightseeing checklist, too—as long as you don’t mind braving the notoriously heavy NYC traffic.

Times Square

It’s hard to imagine visiting New York without stopping by Times Square. Here, you can immerse yourself in one of the busiest urban areas in the world. Check out what’s scrolling on the infamous billboards, stroll past the many theaters on Broadway, and stop by the statues of influential New Yorkers like George M. Cohan and Father Duffy.

And then, of course, there’s the public art. The free arts in Times Square often take the forms of sculpture installations and live performances. Although donations are sometimes encouraged, there’s no admission fee, so you can enjoy the area at no cost.

Pier 66 at Hudson River Park

A short jaunt south of the aforementioned Pier 76 lies another opportunity to hang out on the Hudson River for free. Pier 66 offers covered seating with gorgeous views of the Hudson River, as well as a stunning 26’ diameter water wheel sculpture called Long Time. This art piece pays homage to the area’s shipping and milling history, and even moves along with the river’s tide.

Pier 66 also features a historic landmark. Frying Pan, a lightship once used by the U.S. Coast Guard as a floating lighthouse, is permanently docked at the pier. Although you can enjoy a meal at the onsite restaurant, you can learn the ship’s history for free, from its construction in 1929 to its service at the Panama Canal during World War II, and of course, to its current location at Pier 66.
