If you’re lucky enough to exhibit at a Toronto trade show, you’ll get to check out a ton of attractions in a world-class city. When you have some time away from the show floor at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), treat yourself to at least a few of the awesome attractions throughout the town.
Outdoor Things to Do During a Toronto Trade Show
Canada isn’t exactly known for having a warm climate. However, despite the cold and icy winters, Toronto tends to have near-perfect weather in the summer. Here are a few places for you to enjoy the sunny, warm days when you have some time away from the show floor.
Lake Ontario Beaches
Didn’t think you could sunbathe in Canada? A visit to the free beaches on the Toronto coast will change your mind. You can dip your toes into Lake Ontario or go for a swim anytime lifeguards are on duty at these free public beaches, which is generally morning to evening every June through September. The City of Toronto prides itself on these gorgeous and pristinely clean public areas so both locals and visitors can enjoy them.
Trillium Park
A quick ten-minute drive away from the MTCC lies the urban sanctuary of Trillium Park. This is more than a beautiful 7.5-acre space filled with native greenery and plants—it’s a free public space packed with amenities. Here’s a look at what you’ll enjoy while you’re there:
- The Ravine, a breathtaking entryway to the park flanked by stone walls that includes an homage to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
- The Summit, a hilltop with some of the most gorgeous views of the city
- Three walking trails that wind throughout the park
- An open-air pavilion where you can get out of the sunshine or drizzle
You can also take part in the Trillium Park Plant Identifier Project, which teaches you about the native plants with plaques that are placed throughout the walkways.
Philosopher’s Walk
Stopping by the University of Toronto might not be at the top of your to-do list when you’re in town for a trade show, but Philosopher’s Walk on the school’s campus should be a priority. Pass
through the Queen Alexandra Gateway and the Bennett Gates on this scenic walkway and be sure to take lots of pictures of the landmarks and foliage on your stroll.
Indoor Attractions in Toronto
If you’re visiting in the cooler months (or just want a break from the summer sun), there are plenty of indoor things to see and do when you have a little time to kill during your Toronto trade show. Remember: this is a world-class city, and their museums and other features are out to prove that the title is well earned.
Museums Aplenty
Toronto is absolutely packed with outstanding museums. Depending on whether you have a few hours or a full day away from the show floor, here are some spots to check out first:
- Royal Ontario Museum. This facility showcases ancient artifacts, cultural exhibitions, and artwork collections. In addition to their permanent pieces, the museum also boasts temporary exhibitions, so check their website to see what’ll be on display during your visit.
- Gardiner Museum. Learn how clay and ceramics have helped shape the world, from ancient vessels and ornaments to modern sculptures. If you have time, you might even be able to take a Drop-In Class and learn the fine art of ceramics!
- Museum of Contemporary Art. Whether you stroll through this museum on your own or take a guided tour, you’ll get to enjoy hundreds of innovative art pieces from local and international artists.
Of course, if museums aren’t really your thing (or if you want to mix things up after checking out the educational opportunities), Toronto has other great indoor attractions that are more than worth checking out.
CN Tower
What do you think of when you picture Toronto? That’s right: the CN Tower. Since this landmark is less than a five-minute walk from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, there’s no reason not to stop by even if you only have an hour to spend!
The tower is set to impress any time of day. Grab a meal at one of several dining options inside and check out the breathtaking views of the surrounding terrain. If you want to get really adventurous, strap on a harness and suspend yourself 116 stories over the city on the EdgeWalk. Or, if you prefer to keep your lunch down, just relax and enjoy the lighting displays, which the CN Tower showcases on special evenings throughout the year.
St. Lawrence Market
Hop into your rental car (or call a ride) and take the 7-minute drive from the MTCC to the St. Lawrence Market. This place has everything from dining to shopping to a weekly farmer’s market. There are even free cultural events throughout the year, so if you’re looking for a dance party with lessons or a masterclass on cooking, don’t pass up an opportunity to check out the St. Lawrence Market.
